March - April 2011

Residency – Sébastien Rien

  Residency – Sébastien Rien

Belgian artist Sebastien Rien took residency at La malterie from March 7 to April 8, 2011. The residency aimed to give the artist the means to experiment on a specific project. La malterie offers artists in residence a work space, financial support and a place to exhibit the final work.

This Residency was organised in partnership with Twilight Zone Gallery in Tournai (BE), and funded by the EU, (European regional development fund – Program Interreg IV France Wallonie Vlaanderen).

Sebastien Rien is a multidisciplinary artist (visual artist, performer, musician). His work centres on the living and technical subjects. He makes his ideas concrete through different and collective projects. In la malterie, he will work on PHASE III, an evolutive project which takes different forms dependant on the working place and the participants. The reflexions of PHASE III are about chaos, apocalypse, imaging, fantasy and society concepts.

In la malterie, Sebastien Rien worked in sculpture / installation around the project PHASE III. The sculpture, an ambivalence between the destruction and the construction, aims to bring the chaos under control and destroy it.

At the end of the residency, his work was exhibited in la malterie from April 4-8.

Also as part of the programme Sebastien Rien invited the public for a performance/opening on March 31. This sound and visual performance was organised in collaboration with the programmer, Emmanuel Pire and two invited musicians Ivann Cruz and Philippe Lenglet, in partnership with Muzzix Festival.
