Franck Populaire – a series of paintings made during 2009 and 2010. Firmly anchored in a pictorial tradition, the lush, broad expanses of his work revisit the theme of landscape. If the experience of looking in a landscape is important, it is equally so in the understanding of these large-scale paintings. The richness, scale and diversity we see in them echo the natural world. As there can be no landscape without the experience of landscapes, there can be no painting without the experience of paintings. These works contain traces of the whole history of the medium. From American Expressionism to Bad-Painting and literal representation, this work is rooted in a deep desire to paint. This exhibition is the result of a call for projects by la malterie to artists resident in its studios. The final choice was made by Paul Lagring, artistic director of Netwerk, our partner organisation in Belgium.
