As Far As I Can See – Jo Lathwood

Jo Lathwood is interested in describing emotional states by using a physical space that an audience can interact with. These intimate physical spaces are of human scale and are regularly made out of wood, cardboard and other familiar materials. The creation of timeless spaces gives Lathwood the opportunity to promote the idea that we can surpass our perceived limitations through stimulating our imagination.

As far as I can see explores navigational systems and textures within the local landscape. The large wooden structure reveals various different viewpoints of the surroundings framed by five circular holes. The central circle exposes a rare sight: a perfect undisrupted horizon line.

In contrast to this natural geometric plane, the structure twists and flexes alluding to the movement of water. The inspiration for this construction is the river Zwalm, which unifies all 12 towns within the municipality that is known as Zwalm. As far as I can see aims to enable the audience to reassess a familiar environment.
